Camaro-based Sedan Coming to Chicago?

According to a report in Autoblog.com this February 6th morning, Chevy will show two new concepts this coming week at the Chicago Auto Show. One of them is rumored to be based on the rear wheel drive Camaro platform. Speculations range from a Z/28 version of the new Camaro, currently the SS is the top model, to a new sedan. The second concept is anyone's guess as Autoblog writes.

I chopped this Camaro sedan a couple of years ago. While there is ZERO chance of an actual Camaro four-door, I'm posting this chop to show that the proportions of the Zeta-platform Camaro work quite well with four-doors. Perhaps the car will be a new Impala? For my "Concours,", I raised the roof of the coupe and widened the rear window, which narrows at the bottom of the coupe, one of my biggest pet peeves of that design. I think widening it at the bottom as I have done here, lightens up the entire design, making it look less "pinched" and more contemporary.

  1. That Camaro sedan looks so much better to me than the coupe. The greenhouse is so open and airy. I can't wait to see what they show in Chicago.

On another note, I think the new CA is probably out -- the local Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center is closed so I'm going to have to make a trip up to the one at 83rd Street. The new CA is always the high point of whatever day I happen to find it!

  2. The only logical Zeta platform sedan that I could see them (re)introducing is the Caprice. GM needs a serious contender in the police car wars, an updated rear wheel drive sedan would give them what they need.

  3. The day I get a new CA is the BEST day of the week usually! I'm going out with a friend tomorrow to do some errands in other towns, so I'll have her bring me to the magazine store that carries it. I hope they have it!

Yup, PX, it could be a new Caprice. I'm sure you remember what I did to the police version:

  4. Paul, are you anywhere near 79th and Amsterdam? I apartment sat there for a couple of months once way back when.

  5. I'm on 73rd between Central Park West and Columbus. I've been here for 37 years. When I moved here there were hookers on the Columbus Avenue corner. Then came the yuppies! Not sure which I prefer! Blizzards, blackouts, hurricanes -- I've seen them all and I'm here!

I think LeftLaneNews.com had a piece about a civilian version of the Caprice cop car that's coming from Australia. It seems to me, though, that Buick should be first to get a rear-drive V8 sedan -- Roadmaster anyone?

And it appears CA isn't out yet. Too bad. I won't rest until I find it!

  6. I had a crazy experience one late night at 74th and CPW back in the late '80s, lol. Will probably be in the memoirs under 'crazy late nights' lol.

I wouldn't even mind seeing the Electra nameplate make a comeback. Would be a perfect name for a hybrid luxury Buick!

  7. As always, I'm very impressed with what you created from the coupe. Passenger won't have to make any sacrifices when entering or exiting and there certainly won't be any bind sports or visibility constraints with a better greenhouse all around.

Your right about a forthcoming Impala coming out and it will borrow the taillamp design from the Camaro.

My guess is that the Granite or small Sonic based SUV might be unveiled, but that's got my wheels turning.

  8. nope, I don't watch football. I've never seen a Superbowl game and don't remember football ever being on in my parent's house either.

yes, i'm going to be writing the book, or books, very soon. they're my next big thing.

  10. haha. the 3 people in the country that don't watch the Superbowl all read my blog. I know PX doesn't watch it either.

  12. I saw some previews of car commercials and the little Darth Vader for Volkswagen looked really cute.

I played hooky... I have 3 book projects for my publisher and I have a resume I promised to do for a friend by tomorrow, but I FINALLY did a new chop. I just had to do some photoshopping and relax tonight. I'll post it for the first one tomorrow.

I'll get up early and start my friend's resume, I promise!

  13. You can add another household to the list of those that don't have the slightest interest in anything to do with the Super Bowl. My interest in football ended when I graduated from High School and that was only because I knew who the players were -- if I don't know who you are, why would I care if you are paid millions of dollars to play football?

I think the MVP got a Camaro Convertible for his trouble. I'd be more interested in a Challenger convertible.

  14. This is a little off-topic but my brother-in-law went to the Philly Auto Show yesterday. His fav car was a Packard! He said it was "really sweet" but he didn't know what year it was. He said all of the carmakers had people circulating in the crowds around their new cars talking to all the people, except BMW. There were 3 guys in a booth who didn't talk to anyone and their display was a couple of SUVs and a USED, NOT PRISTINE 2008 Z4! He said it was evident they really didn't care. And I love my BMW! Ugh!

I hate football, too, but my hubs is a football nut. I made food for him and watched some of the game. Tested my patience and my hub's favorite team didn't even win. LOL
Loved the beaver commercial and Darth Vader, too. (My mom teases my great-nephew, who's 3, with the remote to her electric fireplace. He still thinks it comes on when he says "abracadabra" to it! LOL)

  15. (1) Kind of looks like a Corvair sedan to me.
    (2) Of course, I think it would be better not as a four-door sedan, but as a two-door wagon. The new Nomad.

  16. lol, you know what, Steve? It looks like the second generation Corvair 4 door pillarless hardtop to me too! I don't know what it is, maybe the angle of the rear window or the height of the greenhouse, but I saw it when I was chopping it and went with it!

  17. Weird, I got your comment notification in my email, but it's not showing up here. I wonder if there is a limit to comments? I'll try posting it this way:

    From Steve:
    From Autoblog:

Word has it that Chevy is planning on rolling out a new special edition Camaro every six months for – hold on while we take out our trusty old Autoblog abacus – two each year! The new ZL1 that debuted in Chicago is said to be the first in a long line that is expected to be followed by a new Transformers edition for the upcoming sequel Dark of the Moon. After that we should see run of 500 replicas of the Camaro SS Convertible that's set to pace the Indianapolis 500, and then a limited-edition Camaro Synergy that'll offer buyers a V6 with all the performance bits you'd expect from the V8.

If the reports prove accurate, that ought to take us through the end of next year. Beyond that, Chevrolet reportedly plans on tapping in to other historic Camaro variants for future specials.

    Bring on the Camaro Nomad!

    reply from Casey:
I remember Pontiac showing cool 2 door Kammback wagons of the Firebird at car shows in the '70s, but nothing ever came of them.

  18. Same deal, maybe there IS a limit to comments:

    from steve:

    Second-generation version: http://www.wqik.net/kammback/index.htm (I love Jim Rockford's puzzled expression.)

    Third-generation version: http://rumors.automobilemag.com/1985-pontiac-trans-am-kammback-wagon-up-for-grabs-2664.html

    And a ... Vista Challenger? http://blog.niot.net/fr/tag/vista+cruiser/

    Reply from Casey:
I've never seen that third generation! It seems like an easy swap for the rear hatch. Too bad GM didn't do a deal with an optional wagonback like Nissan did with their Pulsar.

That Challenger is interesting, but with all the fabrication too bad they didn't do something with the Challengers rear side windows which don't align with the Vista back at all.

  19. The new Corsa 4 door pillar less hard top and yes also to a new Nomad. Chevy ought to be paying you $1 million @ year and build these!
