Andy Griffith in his role as the eponymous Ben Matlock, which ran from 1986-92.
R I P — Breaking news on the TV just reported that Andy Griffith has died at his home in North Carolina. He was known as "America's Sheriff" throughout the 1960s due to his enduring, and endearing, role as Sheriff Andy Taylor in "The Andy Griffith Show" which aired from 1960-68. In the 1980s, Griffith starred in "Matlock" as a country-lawyer of the Perry Mason ilk. It was this later role that I remember the best. My mother adored the show and whenever I watch a rerun of one, I'm right there back in my mother's home watching it with her. Mr. Griffith spent an entire career untainted by scandal. He was also a singer and guitar and banjo player and frequently worked those talents into his TV shows. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and family and to those millions of viewers that are just a little bit sad today. Thank you, Andy Griffith!
This is a very short, one minute, video of Andy Griffith in the role of Sheriff Andy Taylor playing guitar and singing to his girlfriend and Aunt Bea on the porch of the Mayberry home.
Andy also made some good films. "A Face In The Crowd" is wonderful and worth renting if you can still get it. He also cut a lot of records of either music or comedy. A lot. I grew up with The Andy Griffith Show (the one later called Andy from Mayberry, with Ron Howard as his son). It went off the air as I entered high school. Boy that was a long time ago! LOL Rest well, Mr. Griffith...
