Postis Interruptis

Zinnias from two-weeks ago. I have yet to see how they're doing: just came home this minute, and wanted to touch base with everyone.

Hello faithful blogpeeps,

I've been in the hospital for the past 8-9 days, unexpectedly. I'm home now, and will take a few days to get stronger, but I'll be regularly posting again as soon as I can. My apologies to all of you that have emailed me and haven't had any replies during this time. I was unable to access the Internet.

See you all soon, back at casey/artandcolour!

Marriage Equality Comes to New York!

My version of the 1963 Chrysler New Yorker Salon. Eagle-eyed car aficionados will notice the slightly shorter trunk, rear fender skirts and front wheels moved closer to the bumper, as well as the argent rocker panels. Rainbow-hued background courtesy of the original advertisement!

B R E A K I N G   N E W S — New York has become the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage, bringing marriage equality to the state. New York is the most populous of the six states, and this law effectively doubled the number of gay American citizens that can legally marry. It was a televised nail-biter last night, the evening before New York's annual Gay Pride weekend. Rachel Maddow stayed on the air past her usual 10 pm deadline, and at approximately 10:30 pm, history was made in Albany. Newly-elected Governor, Andrew Cuomo signed it into law just a short time later. Thirty days from now, gay people all over New York can begin to marry and enjoy the approximately 1,300 legal rights and privileges that are bestowed upon couples when they marry. Congratulations mes amies, and have a GREAT Pride weekend.

Breaking News: Success!

I haven't posted any "breaking news" on my blog before, but this is a great time to start. The first of the trapped Chilean miners, Florencio Ávalos, 31, has made it to the surface. He has been reunited with his wife and his 8-year old son, and seems to be in good, robust health. It was tremendously touching to watch in real time. Now we all have to hope that the next 35-36 trips go as well. There were 33 trapped miners, and 3-4 paramedics and rescuers have made the descent and will have to be lifted out. Each round trip takes approximately 45 minutes, so it will be more than a full day and night before they're all safely on the surface again.

Signs of the Times. Sigh.

Today, In between gale force winds and torrential downpours—Tropical Storm Nicole making her way through Connecticut—I rode my bike to town to get some [much needed] exercise. This is a local bank I ride by every day, and it's encircled in yellow police tape. Notice the Connecticut State Police van parked at the door. This Webster Bank has been robbed in the past, and apparently was robbed again today. The highway (I-95) is just down the street, so it's a relatively easy on and off—that's the only reason I can think of for its multiple robberies. There are at least five other banks in town, but they're all in the town center and thus, more difficult to get away from in a hurry. There has been a rash of bank robberies all around the state recently, and I can only think that the terrible economy has quite a bit to do with it, unfortunately.

Also note, that sadly, the flag is at half-mast again today. Recently, another one of this state's finest, and the nation's finest, was killed in Fallujah, Iraq. They're calling it a "noncombat incident," but regardless, if this country wasn't in such an ill-advised war in the first place, he'd still be alive and his parents would still have a son. For more on U.S. Army Pfc. Gebrah P. Noonan's death, click here.

Update: More details of his death can be found here. Apparently it was an out-of-control vocal altercation with other soldiers, and there was a second young man murdered as well. Tragic, all the way around.
