I took a couple of walks around town yesterday. The temperature was in the mid 40°s—very reasonable for the beginning of January in New England. For most of the day, a very low-hanging fog filled the air, literally fading out at only about fifty feet. In the photos, the fog appears as a smoky haze, but it was in fact, just fog.
There is still snow on the ground from our Christmas weekend Nor'Easter, but the warming temperatures and moist fog-filled air, is melting it. The abstract patterns left behind remind me of those topographical maps showing elevations.
I was intrigued by the patterns of snow on the frozen pond. They swirled in rings, almost in a woodgrain pattern. This photo was taken around 4 pm. This pattern is very obvious if you click on the image and enlarge it.
Within just a few minutes, the sun was beginning to set.
The fog not only lingered over the frozen pond, it seemed to be getting thicker as the light waned. This is a small pond in the center of town, behind the stores on Route 1.
