On a Lighter Note: Buh Bye Llanview!

One Life to Live's opening banner, 1968.

Oy. Just checked the electronic TV guide for the synopsis of today's One Life to Live—completely forgetting the soap opera ended it's more than 40-year run last Friday. My favorite soap, All My Children, ended in September, and now the Buchanans et al are gone from the small screen. RIP, OLTL, 1968-2012.

I've watched soaps since the mid 1960s when I sat with my grandmother, mesmerized by The Edge of Night, the Guiding Light, Search for Tomorrow, The Secret Storm and General Hospital. Of all of them. only GH is still on, and rumors abound, it, too, will be gone by the end of the year. When I had my "important" career for all of those years, I taped episodes with my new-fangled VCR. Since I've been a stay-at-home worker, I've watched them daily, without fail. Not that I sat in front of the set, hanging on every word, but they were on in the background. I listened with half an ear, enough to keep up with the storylines. They were like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, my mother's hand-made afghans, my vintage collections—all comfort foods as it were. Their demise is just another break with my past—my late friend Andy shared my affinity with ABC soaps.

Times change, decisions are made, life marches on—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, sometimes just for the sake of change itself. This is my heartfelt thank you, and good bye, to all the actors and writers of One Life to Live—thank you for literally decades of entertainment and memories.

And a note to ABC: I will never, let me repeat, never, tune into your cheap-ass reality TV show replacements, The Chew and The Revolution. Nevuh, lol!

  1. Although I gave up AMC and OLTL a long time ago, I still had warm feelings for them. I learned a lot from those shows and from all the others that I watched at various times. I remember when Search for Tomorrow and Guiding Light were live 15 minute shows -- SfT at 12:30 and GL at 12:45. My Grandma watched them along with some others and the son of a friend of my Mom's was on GL briefly which is why I started watching on my own.

The Chew is a truly dreadful show even though individually I like some of the people who are on it. I'll admit we watched it today because Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were on and they were charming as always. I don't think any guest could get me to watch The Revolution -- Ty Pennington's 15 minutes of fame were up a long time ago and he should just get lost.

  2. I like the greek chef, Michael something or another. I watch him on the Food Network quite often. It's just a "political" thing with me, lol. If The Chew was the last TV show on, I'd turn the set off, lol.

  3. oh casey!!! SAY IT ISN'T SOOOO!!! Remember Karen Wokek?? oh my! I would watch off and on as it would be amazing writing (always with bad actors) and then the story lines would be crap and then they would be great...what a roller coaster ride! I need to go and read how things ended up...I got WAY off track this last year..even with my beloved GH!
    Thanks for the heads up...

  5. When I worked nights in the late 1980s and early 1990s I got hooked on Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful and As The World Turns. Twenty years later if I catch a few minutes of one of those shows on a day off, it only takes about five minutes to figure out it's mostly the same characters doing the same thing. That's sort of incredible. Not exactly quality culture, but still. The end of an era!

  6. I was really sad when Guiding Light ended = and As the World Turns. Since my studio is at home, I have the tele on (music makes me dance in my seat which doesn't lend itself well to painting, drawing and fine-tuning PS work) still listen to Young and the Restless, which is probably still on because (a) it's good and (b) it's aired during a potential lunch hour. I guess Disney owns SoapNetwork although they DO play Y&R on there....but, why aren't they jockeying for rights to air the classics from the beginning, like they've done with Ryan's Hope? I gotta say, I LOVE the nostalgia of of watching them from back in the 70's - the fashion, the conversation styles, and you can see them trying to delicately weave in certain social and political issues of the times......it's really fascinating, in a way.

Love your blog, CS - keep it up!
