What's That Luminescence?

Oh yeah, electric light! The lights are on, again!

After six days without electricity, Pink Gardens is ablaze once again. Well, it's noon, so it's not any brighter that it normally is, lol, but by tonight, I'm going to put on every light in every room. Just because I can. I'm so tired of hunkering down with a flashlight rigged to a floor lamp so I can read until my eyes get blurry—about an hour! I managed to read several books during the days, though—Kathy Reichs',  Monday Mourning (Bones TV show character), Carson McCullers' The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Khaled Hosseini's, The Kite Runner, Stephen King's, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and an anthology of short mystery stories collected by Alfred Hitchcock, so there is an upside to everything!

I have lots of photos to download, clean up and post, so give me a day or two. I have food shopping to do, as I had to throw out everything in the refrigerator and freezer. I have soaps to get caught up with, lol. I'm aflutter with things I need to do. With electricity!

Thanks to everyone that commented and sent emails. It's been an odd summer, for me, to say the least, and it's really nice to know there are people [out there] thinking about me.

  1. "...and there was light!"

I can't imagine how awful a week without electricity must be. I'm glad you're ordeal is over and I'm sure we're all looking forward to your pictures.

    Welcome back!!

  2. Welcome back!!! It is amazing though what we can do without electricity. I found reading by candlelight quite fun. Not a single candle mind you but a nice grouping provides really brilliant readable light.

But you were tested for sure. Just glad you are back and that everyone is fine. We appreciated the interim report from June. Tx.

  4. Yay! You're back! Welcome back and know we really worried and wondered about you, and missed you! Thank you Annie for keeping us posted on the outage and projected return to civilization.

Sorry you lost all your food Casey. Ouch! You sure read what I imagine are some great books, though!

SO good to have you back. How did Pink Gardens fare in the hurricane?

  5. THANKS CASEY FOR THE E MAIL.I KNOW THAT FEELING WHEN THE HURRICANE IS OVER AND THEN WE HAVE TO CLEAN UP THE MESS. IT'S SUCH A SCARY FEELING. I LOOK BACK WHEN I WAS A KID AND WOULD GO SPEND TIME WITH MY GRANDMOTHER. THE HOUSE WOULD BE SO COLD AT NIGHT WHEN THE KITCHEN WOODBURNING STOVE HEAT WOULD COME TO A STAND STILL. IN THE NIGHT YOU'D HAVE TO GO WEE AND YOU'D HATE TO GET OUT FROM UNDER THE COVERS. I'D SLEEP WITH MY GRANDMA. SHE'D SAY JUST PULL THE POT OUT FROM UNDER THE BED AND I'LL KEEP YOUR SPOT HERE IN BED WARM FOR YOU. LOL, I CAN REMEMBER THOSE WORDS LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. ALSO TO GET WATER, WE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE A CLEAN PAIL AND WALK DOWN TO THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY TO THE WELL. BELIEVE ME, IT WAS COLD IN THE WINTER TO FIGHT THE WIND AND SNOW BUT WE DID IT JOYFULLY. WE'D HAVE TO CARRY WATER IN PAILS TO THE BARN IN ORDER TO WATER THE HORSES,COWS CHICKENS AND PIGS. THOSE WERE THE DAYS. I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS WELL. YOUR FRONT PORCH OR A WINDOW SILL WOULD BE YOUR ICEBOX FOR EXTRAS. YES, WE HAD AN ICEBOX IN THE KITCHEN THAT THE ICEMAN WOULD DELIVER THE ICE. THOSE WERE WONDERFUL DAYS. SO WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT IT BRINGS BACK THE OLD DAYS. BUT IT LOVELY WHEN THEY COME BACK ON. WE'VE COME A LONG WAYS BABY.

  6. I can see the appeal of an earlier lifestyle, but it would take a lot more preparation on my part to enjoy it for more than I did, lol. It was hard to find decent food to cook for only 1 person, for only 1 night. I couldn't have any leftovers because they'd spoil. SO GLAD to have the refrigerator back!

Pink Gardens came through just fine. The little road was blocked for a while, but the yard is fine. We did a lot of staking up and taking in the potted plants. You'd never know we had a hurricane from our yard.

Besides reading, I spent Wednesday afternoon and made 11 new cardboard "quilt" bases for future artwork. I have so many precut piece of cardboard, I barely made a dent in the piles.

  7. How was the Kite Runner novel?

I believe they made a movie about that, right?

  8. The Kite Runner was excellent! It was sad, as life so often is, but it had some hope in it as well. Not sure if they made a movie of it, but there was certainly enough of a story to carry a movie. I'd recommend it. I'd also recommend The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It's one of those books we were all given to read in high school, but to read it as an adult was much different. I loved it, sad as it was, also.

I'll have to make a note to see it. Good reviews from Ebert and Annie!

  11. The other book by the author of Kite Runner is also excellent....Splendor of a THousand Suns or something. I liked it a little better actually..though it's also pretty sad.

  12. thanks, Ish. I'll look for it at the library. For years, I've collected books at yard sales, thrift stores etc, but never find the time to read them. I'm really glad that between the hospital stay and Irene, I'm back to reading for the pleasure of it, and have so many good books to read at home. I just got my library card 2 weeks ago though, so I can find books I don't own already. I'll definitely look for Hosseini's second book.

the Amazon listing is VERY complimentary for his second book. As soon as the library gets power and reopens, I'll check it out.

Interestingly, the publisher has decided to keep the book design/style from The Kite Runner for his second book. That's the mark of a.) great sales, and b.) the hope for many future books from this author. They've "branded" him already.

  15. Oh but Mare neglected to mention that she and hubby have been "eating" their way to Wisconsin and back while some of us sat here at home waiting for Casey's return. A little side benefit when you follow Mare on Twitter - her own version of " Diners, Drive-ins & Dives". rofl

  16. I love that show! I would rather eat at a D, D or D than a 5-star restaurant. Well, most of the time. If someone else is paying, however.... : )

  17. OH MY GOSH ANNIE...you hit that right on the head...eating our way to Wisconsin and back...only detail left out is we just laid down and had someone give us a start and we "rolled" home...shouldn't need to eat for quite a while...BUT you know THAT won't happen!!
    ROFL!!!
p.s. for the most part someone else paid AND that makes it all the better!!!
and if anyone even cares, you can check out the "twitter thing" (that btw I was NOT going to do lol) just my life...nothin' more...nothin' less! :)
