I recently found this original drawing packed away in a closet. It's by Steven Stipelman, one of the wonderful illustrators at
Women's Wear Daily when I worked there. If we didn't care for the photos of the fashions we were featuring that day in the newspaper, we could assign one of our illustrators to render them instead. They were consummate professionals and could "whip up" illustrations like this in just a few hours for that day's front page. Stephen gave this drawing to me when I left the company. It dates to the early '90s and was I believe, RTW, or for the Ready-to-Wear section that week.

Wow, that is amazing....a few hours?... I couldn't do it in a lifetime. I think there is a softness and a "tactileness" to an illustration like this that just doesn't exhist in a photograph.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I loved having the option to use an illustrator. It was really an extravagance but part of my publishing history I'll never forget!

DeleteHey Casey, I once posed for Antonioni. The illustration was in Sunday's Times magazine section. Major fun seeing my face in a stylish drawing. A flood ruined my only copy! Oy. I've always LOVED fashion illustration. Great field.

DeleteI've been trying to remember the designer. It was Georgio Armani. Yeah, I guess I could find it with major effort. I think I'll write books instead. I forgot to say "hi". Hi!
