Boo!

Madison's "Sea, Shop and Scare" Annual Contest
My town's annual scarecrow contest has been going strong for a couple of weeks. I photographed these colorful, and creative, creations last week on a beautiful 70° day. The contest is sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce, and is entitled Sea, Shop and Scare. The contest benefits the chamber and our town library. I'm surprised at the expressions that can be created with just a few lines from a magic marker or a few buttons or what-have-you. Some of them really seem to be enjoying themselves.

The details of some of the scarecrows are as well composed as a painting. Here, a French picnic ready to enjoy!

Some private homes got into the spirit as well. At least I hope those huge spiders are decorations!

Enjoying an afternoon swing, this bony resident waves at all that pass.

My Favorite from Last Year
This gorgeous creation, a mix of roses, pearls and ribbons, was not recreated this year. Perhaps the store felt they couldn't top it!

For more photos of this year's scarecrows, follow the jump.

  1. YEAH!!!! I remember your walkabout around Halloween last year Casey! and I SO remember the last photo! So good to see it again! Thanks for the "tour" some people are truly creative!!...Are people used to u walking about taking pics? I feel like people are going to call the police when I take pics of things and am "aimed" at their homes!! I usually wait till hubby needs to drive somewhere and I hop into the passenger side and roll down the window for "drive by" picture shooting! LOL

  2. I THINK most people are used to me by now. I definitely feel the need to tell people about my blog and art if they look at me though, lol.

I'm going to have business cards printed one of these days, with the blog name on it, so I can give them to people when I'm photographing things. I tell people now, but then you have to recite the web address and just hope they're computer savvy enough to remember it and then go to it. With a little card, I think they'd check it out and I'd be more 'legit' appearing!

  4. I'M NOT A HALLOWEEN PERSON. I DO ADMIT I LOVE THE LITTLE KIDDIE. I ALSO LIKE THE FALL DECORATIONS LIKE YOUR PICTURES. WHAT RUINED IT FOR ME WAS TEENAGERS COMING BY ONE YEAR AND STEALING OUR DECORATIONS FROM OURY FRONT ENTRANCE.$$$$$$$$$$$ IT WAS THE LAST TIME FOR ME. BOLD AS BRASS. I SAW THEM BUT COULDN'T CATCH THEM THEY DROVE OFF IN A CAR. LAUGHING ALL THE WAY. I SAY TOWNS SHOULD HAVE THE TRICK OR TREATING LIKE AMY'S TOWN.DURING THE DAYTIME AND MAKING IT SAFE FOR THE WEE ONES. BA HUM BUG.

  5. Pink Gardens is at the end of an unlit single lane private road, the only house on the road, and I've never had a single trick-or-treater come by. And I'm happy about it. Even when I lived in a home in a "regular" neighborhood, I never turned on the yard lights and never answered the door, and went out to nightclubs most of the time anyway. It's not my job to give little kids candy, lol.

  6. They sell blank business cards at staples. It only becomes cumbersome when setting up the template to
print out what you want. I used to give out my site address during test drive, but I think the sales people
used it to scratch the back of the ear with them, lol.

I like how people's imagination come out during Halloween with the display of crafts and organic substances as seen in the above photos. I counted at least 10 scarecrows this year. The previous years had blown up pumpkins connected to air machines.
