Treading Water—In the Air

The day I shot this photo, the wind was so strong that these seagulls were hanging stationary in the air. Every few seconds they adjusted their wings, headed into the air, and just floated on the air currents above my head. I wanted to soar with them!

  1. The serenity captured in this photo belies the actual conditions that you experienced. I wish I were that center gull heading off to Europe for the winter, lol!

  2. I used to see this phenomenon at Fire Island in the 70s, back in the olden days, sometimes while crossing the bay on the ferry! If gulls have the concept of fun, I'll be this is fun for them!

  3. thanks! Yes, it's really peaceful at the shore now that the summer is over. I love the actual shoreline more during the other three seasons rather than summer, but it's pretty nice during summer, too, lol.

  7. I don't think National Geographic is capable of taking such as shot. Knowing my luck, one would drop their payload on me , lol.
