Clouds in my Coffee... er, um, Pond.

Fluffy white clouds reflected perfectly in Tuxis Pond in the center of town. Not a ripple, frog or turtle is disrupting the smooth surface allowing the sky to be seen below, as well as above, me. The lack of wind is evident in the unfurled flag's reflection, seen in the lower right.

Just a few autumn leaves to give away the season.

The deep blue sky, the deep blue man-made pond.

Clouds of Another Sort
The day before the photos at the top of this post were shot, the clouds along the shore were gray and brooding. Look at the distinctive line of clouds on the horizon, visible through this beach side pergola. Those clouds are hanging right above New York's Long Island.

Here We Go Again!
The weather forecast for this weekend isn't good. We're supposed to have a very, very, rare October snowstorm and nor'easter. Along the shore we're supposed to see 3-6 inches of snow; further inland they're expecting up to 12-15 inches. Winds tomorrow night, (Saturday), are predicted to reach 60 mph and power outages are also being discussed—long term power outages, like we had in Tropical Storm Irene. Because many trees still have their leaves, the weight of the snow will cause many of them to come crashing down, bringing the powerlines with them. The temperatures will be in the 30s this time, however—not looking forward to having no electricity or heat for a few days! If I'm not blogging or answering emails for a while after Saturday night, you'll know why. I hope they're wrong about this one.

I've picked all the remaining dahlias and zinnias and have brought in all of my cactuses, geraniums, spiderplants, and begonias for the winter. It's crowded in here! Most people just buy new geraniums each year, but I like to winter them over. This will be the fourth year for this bunch, and my "annual" begonias are going on their ninth year.
  • Ryan Hanrahan's weather blog, Way Too Much Weather, about this upcoming historic October snowstorm.
  • Ryan's Saturday morning update. I've already ridden my bike to town today and bought my food/drink for the weekend, so now I can just sit tight. I've got a book to work on for my publisher and a lengthy list of car chops if I want to relax. It's raining slightly right now, and is so dark I have the lights on inside. The grocery store was crazy, as usual, on an "event" day!

  3. A snowplow would be good, but I think we'll need a logger or treecutter more, lol!

  5. LOVE the pics, but the bottom one is absolutely mesmerizing! Beautiful!
Glad you got your plants in...I was going to try that (bringing in some plants) but having moved we didn't have any worth doing that with this year...I am, however, always afraid I am going to bring "creatures" in with me...never sure what KIND of creatures, but I don't any of ANY description! I'm a big scaredy cat!
Sounds like a lovely costume Annie! One of the first posts of yours that sticks in my mind was a halloween costume...or was that the 2nd year where you were "Barnabus" from Dark Shadows..???
Have a great (non-snowy) weekend everyone!

  6. Mare: I'm really fussy about bringing in the plants. That's why it takes me a day or two. I take them out of their pots and replant them after I wash them off thoroughly. I don't want any insects or spiders coming out of them! The geraniums were in the big cast-iron planters so I had to repot them too. I used the hose and washed them off on Wednesday and Thursday! OF course, I watch them carefully now too, to make sure nothing was growing in the stems, lol. Two of my Xmas cactuses that were in the shade on the porch have buds on them already. I think they might be out early this year.

  7. THE PICTURES ARE SO PERFECT.VERY CLEAR AND YOU WOULDN'T THINK THAT THERE WAS A BIG STORM HEADING YOUR WAY. LOTS OF LUCK. SOMETIMES I WONDER IF PLANTS KNOW HOW MUCH SOME OF US LOVE THEIR BEAUTY. I LIKE TO BELIEVE THEY DO. I BELIEVE IN SAVING THEM, ALSO. YOU JUST KNOW THEY SMILE WITH YOU GIVE THEM A BATH. MAKE SURE YOU GET BEHIND THEIR EARS.
MARE ARE YOU READY TO BE A LOGGER? I'LL BE THE OTHER ONE.I'M NOT BIG ON HALLOWEEN BUT IF YOU DRESS UP I WILL ALSO. WE CAN'T LET ANNIE HAVE ALL THE FUN. MAYBE WE CAN GET CASEY TO GO TRICK AND TREATING AS A TREE. I'LL LEAVE JOEY HOME. GIGGLE GIGGLE. IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW CASEY, JOEY IS MY MALTESE. GIGGLE GIGGLE.
GRAMPS TOLD ME THIS MORNING THAT A MOTHER DOWN THE STREET KILLED HERSELF FRIDAY. HER TWO LITTLE GIRLS CAME HOME FROM SCHOOL AND FOUND HER. I FEEL SO BAD FOR THEM. I'VE SPOKE TO THE OLDEST GIRL A COUPLE TIMES [AROUND 11]. I HEARD THE POLICE CARS AND FIRE TRUCK AND ALL FRIDAY BUT JUST THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS SICK. THE LADY I GUESS JUST COULDN'T HANDLE LIFE ANYMORE. HER HUSBAND LEFT HER. IF ONLY SHE HAD REACH OUT TO SOMEONE.

  8. SOrry to hear about the mother. The exact same thing happened 3 houses down from us when I was in grade school. One of my friend's mother hung herself and let the little girl find her when we came home from school. I understand depression and suicide, but I don't understand ruining a child's life like that.
