A Proper VW Sports Coupe

Not content with the latest wagon-ish Scirocco, I changed the proportions a bit, and made it a fastback hatchback, a la the original Giugiaro Scirocco and the later VW-designed Corrado models. I think it captures much more of the spirit of the originals, and ends up being much more attractive, imho. Click for full 1,000 pixels width.

  1. Unbelievable. We were talking about this at the local car show last Saturday night. I think if you took 6" off the wheelbase behind the door and 3-4" off the rear overhang, you'd be able to sell them the 2013 refresh for a quick 1 million USD. Can I be your agent??? Oh... can you fix their tail lights too and put them on the back of the car where they belong. I'm tired of the Bangle wrap around side-rear light movement. I has run it's course, hasn't it?

Glad you are on my daily read list now Casey.

  2. lol, love your comments. thanks. I can't understand what VW was thinking with their new Scirocco. I've studied cars since I was a kid in the 1960s, and I think that perspective is just missing from many of today's designers. I'm not saying everything has to be retro this or retro that, but just an understanding of what came before, and how to incorporate it into the present and future, is part of design.

I design books, and i have a collection of antique books dating back to 1800. I know exactly when to use classic design and when to push the envelope and WHY. Today's car designers seem to live in a vacuum, and do what's 'new' without any regard to doing what's right or in fact, beautiful...

I'm very glad to have you as a reader, RW.

  5. Yes, any Corrado or Scirocco replacement should be a FASTBACK.

  6. thank, Anonymous! Some things shouldn't be totally reinvented. A sport coupe isn't a sport wagon, although I like both types of cars. The Scirocco/Corrado should be a sport coupe. imo, of course!
