Garden Walkabout, July 2010

"Annual" Begonia that I've had for six years now. I cut it back in the fall and spring and bring it into the house for the winter. It triples in size during each summer. Click on each image to enlarge.
Bean flower. I have five types of beans, bush and climbing. This is either a green, yellow, or red string bean.
I've moved the Hydrangea to a new location. That part of the house is undergoing some serious renovations to the exterior, so I've moved them to a quieter location. The coloring is still amazing, going from a light mint green baby flower going through the peach, pink and blue stages.
Another bean flower. I didn't know they had such an intricate bloom.
Dark Dusty Rose sedum. Many varieties of Sedum bloom in September, but mine is a mid-summer bloom. I found all of these growing alongside the train tracks, under the evergreen trees, that border this property on the south side. They were tiny, and I wasn't even positive they were Sedums, but I thought they might be. They've been in their present location for five years now, and they've spread and flourished. The color is deeper than most Sedums I've seen also.
Can't get enough of the bean flowers!
Peach and BRIGHT Yellow Day lilies are coming out as of yesterday. Last year I didn't have a single open blossom; the deer ate every single bud one night before they came out. This year, I have about 60 buds, so I hope they all make it. The color is very odd. I'm not sure I would have bought them if they had been out, but they actually go with the new house color perfectly. Plus you love your odd children more, right? hahahaha.

  1. You have a beautiful garden. I'm definitely a hydrangea lover - have 4 types around the house, listed in order of my favorites - annabelles, nikko blues, oak leaf and climbing. I worked on & off, as a 2nd job, for a party florist for 15 years until he passed away about 6-7 years ago. Miss being immersed in that environment.

  2. one of my best friends, Mary, really someone I consider my sister, is responsible for the great varieties of flowers/veggies around here. She owns a floral design business, doing high-end weddings and parties and corporate work. I've worked for her in the room set-up stage, not the floral work, but it was a lot of fun watching a floral design for a room come together just before the guests arrive.

  5. I HEAR YOU ABOUT AFFORDING THE THINGS YOU LOVE. FLOWERS AND TREES ARE WAY TO COSTLY AND IT TAKES THE JOY OUT OF BUYING THEM. WAIT UNTIL YOU GET ON SS. GOES FAST.
I LOOK AT LIFE NOW AT THIS AGE, IF YOU HAVE FOOD, CLOTHES ON YOUR BACK AND A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD, YOUR BLESSED. RIGHT? GRANDKIDS ADD TO THE BLESSING.

  6. paying my rent and cable/phone/internet is my priority each month. i used to worry about the correct shade of perennials I was buying. When i gave up working full time to work on my art, I had to give up all those luxuries. Now the luxury in my life is time, time to do all the art i want to do, so i go without almost everything else. I like it better now though to tell you the truth.

  8. Hi, don't think my last comment or two made it to you so will give it a shot again!
I think you just traded one luxury for another! We did something similar in moving closer to family and giving up some of our income..being closer was more important. How did you decide where to land? We are still debating on where we would like to be "permanently".
I appreciate your lifestyle and have a similar philosophy on it.
(oh, don't comment on the cars much, but I do LOVE looking at your chops!)
