A Walk Through the Community Gardens

D I G I T A L   P H O T O G R A P H Y — Yesterday, June and I, my friend and fellow resident of Pink Gardens, rode our bikes to our town's Community Gardens. For a nominal fee, I think it's $35-50, you can rent a 20x20 foot plot of land on a farm that was given to the town. Gardens of all sorts, and gardeners of all sorts, rent these little pieces of farmland to varying degrees of success. I shot mostly the flowers, as the vegetables were almost uniformly untended and rather sad looking. I'm going to chalk it up to the heat wave we've had for the entire month of July, and am going to check back next week. The past few days have not been quite as hot, and maybe that will nudge the 'farmers' to tend their vegetable plants a bit more closely. It was a shame to see so many tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and beans just rotting on the vine rather than being picked when ripe. It took all I had not to go and "remedy" the situation by picking them, but Karma's a bitch, so I didn't take anything that wasn't mine, lol. I'm glad we have our own garden at home though, as it's just so much nicer to be able to go right outside and weed, and to check on how the plants are doing—it's so much of the gardening experience to just walk around and stare at the burgeoning bounty on a daily, if not hourly, basis.

Four more photos after the jump.

  1. Lovely... the little things in life I miss with condo living. I suppose I could print these out and tape them up over my windows.

I really should learn how to use my Photoshop program, but I get so frustrated that I always slip back to one of my simpler photo programs.

Maybe I will add some for my screen saver to enjoy. Thanks.

  4. Hi Granny! funny you should say that. I always have a hard time getting to sleep, then i have a hard time getting up. I usually sleep from about 3am 'til 9am. the rest of the day i'm working on art, a book, or riding my bike! I just got back from my nightly ride along the beach road. it was like Grand Central Station with all the riders and walkers!

  6. You truly have a artist's eye when it comes to photography. Each flower was captured in it's true, natural beauty. I particularly love the sunflowers - especially the last one with the bee searching for pollen.

  7. Casey, these are just lovely...I feel sad about the veggies...good for you to walk away, but how hard was that!! To see all those veggies just lying there...
The glads made me a little sad...My grandma had a WONDERFUL garden and even tho we lived in the middle of the midwest (eastern NE) people visiting from Calif would even stop and look at her gardens..:)
I hope sometime you will share a full view of a garden area at your house if you don't mind sharing that.
Hope you have cooled down some today!

  8. Annie: You'd have to pay for my insurance and spot me some gas money too, lol. I can park it for free though! : )
PX: Thanks! I really like it when I can capture insects around flowers. You should have seen me trying to get a pic of a Monarch this moring (or a Viceroy, who can tell the difference). It was flitting here and there on my zinnias, but i never got it.
Mare: The detail shots are the best at this time of year. My gardens are really best in spring and early summer. I'm sure I have some 'all over' shots from then. I just have to search on my HD. They're nothing compared to my Mom's old yard, which I had to sell in 2003. We had about 2 acres and the entire yard was just different perennials. I only mowed the pathways between them. It was spectacular. This yard, is just what I can do on the cheap. And until 2-3 years ago, the other neighbors in the house were horrid, and I hated to work outside. Pink Gardens was more like Green Acres until 2 years ago. I'm sure I have some pics of my mom's gardens somewhere too. That was before I had a digital camera though, but I don't mind scanning if i find the prints.

  13. RELOOKING AT THESE FLOWERS ALSO KNOWING THAT THERE WERE VEGGIES DYING ON THE VINE I DON'T KNOW, I MIGHT BE THINKING JUST ONE TOMATO WON'T HURT. THE BUNNIES HELP THEMSELVE. I CAN REMEMBER THE WOMEN AND MEN WOULD ALWAYS TASTE THE VEGGIES OR FRUIT BEFORE THEY BOUGHT THEM IN THE STORES OR STANDS. ALWAY PREMITTED. I COULD ALWAYS LEAVE AN I OWE YOU NOTE. LOL
