A "unique" way to decorate your car... I came across this Billboard Special at a highway truck stop/gas station 25-27 years ago, and the negative has been languishing in my files ever since. Tammy Wynette-s? I think they went one press-on letter too far, lol. I found it very interesting that John Lennon and Love were interspersed with all of those classic country singers. I'd be willing to bet it's the one and only time Dottie West and John Lennon shared a "marquee!"
I like the '69 Oldsmobile Cutlass coupe in the background too. It was just a daily driver/used car in the early '80s.
Another photo from the highway rest/truck stop that night. I used to take portraits of almost anyone I found that appealed to me. There was something about this waitress's face and demeanor that just seemed so homey at three in the morning. A difficult life perhaps, but not NEARLY as bitter and jaded as I was, even though she was perhaps twice my age and worked the tedious, and often trouble-filled, overnight shift on the highway.
Looks like maybe a 67-68 Ford - ruined by someone's over enthusiasm - not unlike people that plaster there cars with bumper stickers from every state theyv'e been too. You know, you don't see that as much as you used too. Maybe people don't do those kinds of driving trips anymore. I liked Cutlass's of that generation also - I had a hot wheels version - hmmm - can't remember the color though - I do remember painted the taillights red, however.
ReplyDeletecars like this amuse me. there is a Neon in the town over from me that is hand painted with swirly figures, almost like Keith Haring. I'll see if I can ever run across it while I have my camera. I'm going to add a photo to this post, I didn't have time before, I had to run out—a highway rest stop waitress from this night.

I can only imagine what an overnight shift at the highway truck stop would be like to work every night. She was so pleasant and willing to put up with my 'artistic' tendencies, I'm glad I captured that spirit.

ReplyDeleteA car aside - In 1969 I bought a 68 Porche 912 from a friend. No B&W here it was Tangerine. I loved that car and I don't even have one picture of it around my treasure box of memories, but she shines brightly in my mind. Did I mention that I loved that car. LOL
Annie: You must have been STYLIN' with your Porsche! There is a 912 of that vintage in my town, only it's Navy Blue. What a cool car to have personal memories of!
