The Days are Getting Shorter

The dog days of summer are upon us. With less than three weeks before the school year starts, this young man was spending the day fishing at the town marina Tuesday. A small boat  motors by in the distance, and that long-empty beach cottage is waiting for a family that will never return to its wraparound porch on Grass Island. Shot at high tide on the East River, Long Island Sound is just to the right of this photo.

Listening to Annie Lennox tonight. I've never before heard this live version of Why, dating to 1995, but the song is one of my favorites.

  3. CASEY, I NEVER HEARD OF ANNIE LENNOX BUT I DO GET WHAT SHE WAS SAYING. I THINK WE ALL LIVE IN SOME WAYS HOW PEOPLE WANT US TO BE. IN SIDE WE ARE THE REAL THING. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY?I COULD GO ON AND ON WITH THIS SUBJECT BUT WON'T. SOMETIMES I WISH I'D DONE A FEW THINGS DIFFERANT IN MY LIFE. I STAYED HOME AND RAISED MY KIDS WHILE GRAMPS GOT HIS DEGREES. THEN THE KIDS GOT THEIR. ONE WITH A MASTERS AND ONE WITH A BA. ME, HS. WE NEVER HAD THOSE EXTRA DOLLARS FOR ME. GRAMPS NEVER SPENT ON HIMSELF EITHER.IT WAS ALWAYS THE FUTURE HE WORRIED ABOUT. STILL DOES. DEPRESSION TIMES EMBEDDED IN HIM BY HIS FATHER. GOOD THING BECAUSE I FEEL WE'RE IN SEMI DEPRESSION RIGHT NOW. NO ONE HAS EVER ASKED ME
WHO I AM OR WHAT I WANTED OUT OF LIFE. MY LIFE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR OTHERS. I SIT HERE LOOKING AT THIS TALL OAK TREE GROWING JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE IN THE SMALL BACKYARD. I WATCH THE BIRDS FLYING IN AND OUT OF THAT TREE AND I WONDER WHAT THEIR LOOKING FOR. THE SQUIRRELS THEY RUN AND PLAY AND LOOK FOR THE ACORNS THAT FALL UNDER THAT TREE. [SURVIVAL]

  4. you could be a poet, Granny. And not the lame kind that rhymes lines! Just write your thoughts as you think them, they'll form a thought for others to read and learn by. That's all poetry should be. You have lots of great thoughts!

  6. Annie: The OTHER Annie changes her hair color all the time. it's been everything from white to black and every shade in between. I bet it's a really cute haircut on you!

  8. Mare: this is actually what's known as a tidal river. it cuts through salt marsh and meadows for miles until it finally comes to hard land. by then, the fluctuation in height for the water is much less. But immediately to the right of this photo is the Long Island Sound, which is a salt water 'ocean' of sorts, so the tides affect that part of the East River too. It's cool at low and high tides. At low tides you see all the crabs and shellfish that live along the edges of the marsh, and at high tide, like this photo, you can go further up river, although you can't always get under the low bridges for the roads until low tide. I don't 'do' boats, but I'm going to have a friend that kayaks take photos for the blog before the season is over.
