LocalColour—My Solo Art Show June 2009

All images in this post will open to 1,250 pixels wide when clicked.

LocalColour was the name of my solo art show last June, a play on "artandcolour" and the "local" vintage images used in many of my pieces. These photos were taken the night before the opening reception, after a couple of nights of hanging the pieces. I had about 25 pieces I didn't use in the show, but had no idea which ones would make the cut until I started hanging the show. It was really more of a space issue—I would gladly have shown them all, but the room was only so big. Most of the shows in this venue place 40-50 pieces and I squeezed in 77.

The three-hour opening reception went very well, with old friends coming in from at least seven states, and the local population of the small hamlet making a nice showing as well. I had four cases of really nice wine—two reds, two whites—and a complete "spread" with literally hundreds of cold shrimp, small sandwiches, many cheese and fruit plates and non-alcoholic drinks and bottled water for those that desired. Mary created the flower arrangements, which were gorgeous and really added to the festive atmosphere. I had about 135 people sign the guest book and by the end of the almost-month long show, had sold seven pieces, quite a good percentage I think for the less-than optimal economic times last summer.

At the end of the show I donated a piece with my mother sitting on a local farm wagon as a child. The first few years of her life were spent in Stony Creek, the little area of town the show was in. She also used the library the gallery is located in for the last ten to fifteen years of her life, and was quite well-known there. It's nice to think of her hanging in their in perpetuity since she had so many good friends that worked and used the library.

You can read a review of my show here, or as always, there is a link on the right column of this blog.

Five more images after the jump.

  1. I really love your work Casey, it is so unusual there is some rather haunting about each piece. I would love to experience them in person.

Your work has inspired me to try something on my own. I can visualize it in my mind, now I will see if I can get out in some art form.

Thanks as always for sharing your work with us.

  9. I also can't believe that you've gone from secretive about your work to being totally out there. I love it.

I know that your move to new digs was traumatic but I'm glad to see that you were able to salvage the family and historical stuff.

Ya know, you edit table-top books for the best. I'd love to own a tabletop book of your art, family treasures and collectables.

Kinda like this blog, but heavier.
