A Vase, a Gnome, and a Stick and a Stone

Left—A tall composite vase I was given, originally a matte black finish. I painted it in the whimsical style you see here, highlighting the various raised and inset surfaces, including several fish shapes. When the friend that gave it to me saw what I had done to it, he liked it so much I gave it back to him, lol.

Middle—One of my vintage garden gnomes that is now purely an indoor sculpture. I gave him a paint treatment that looks like he's wearing jewels all over his clothes and used a gold glaze on top of everything to seal it.

Right—The pinkish gray stone at the bottome is the only piece of granite I have from my great-great-grandfather's quarry, the same stone his quarry supplied for the base of the Statue of Liberty. I've mounted a twirling piece of wood on it, which I found on one of my frequent walks in the woods.

  1. Casey, your third photo sort of reminds me of Barnett Newman's great sculptor "Broken Obelisk." I first saw this outside the Rothko Chapel in Houston when I lived there before moving to NYC. A great little "chapel" devoted to MLK and world peace, and also displays a series of Rothko's final works before he whacked himself. He's always been my favorite abstract expressionist.

Sorry to ramble so much - this is all online and easy to find in anyone's interested.

  2. Jesus Christ - I meant "sculpture" not "sculptor"!! Ugh

  3. Interesting comparison, Brian, I looked up that piece. I wasn't familiar with Barnett Newman. Thanks! I don't really have a name for that piece but I've thought about the "Balancing Act" which would fit in with Newman's piece too. I've always liked Rothko's color study-like paintings. So simple, and creative.
