Early 1950s Japanese Baseball Jackets, Satin and Velvet

I have several of these circa 1951 Japanese baseball-type jackets. Most of them are velvet on one side, and quilted satin on the other, although a couple of them are satin on both sides. They're reversible, with either side being suitable for the 'exterior' with no labels or unfinished stitching to be found anywhere. I used to wear these jackets quite often, but the now almost sixty-year old stitching is pulling loose in places, and the elasticized waists and cuffs have seen better days. I may try to frame them instead, but they would have to be visible on both sides, and I'm not sure what I'd do with the sleeves. The craftsmanship of the stitched artwork is really incredible when seen up close. These images are clickable to enlarge of course.

  1. I remember these jackets, Casey, they are so pretty. Could you frame them in a plexi-glass box frame? I bet you could make your own. Tuck in the sleeve or fold it at an angle, which ever works best with the design.

If you are still interested in wearing this art, the cuffs and waistband both can be easily replaced.

Peek at some of those Baseball Hall of Fame mementos and see if you find any suggestions.

But framed in a plastic box and hung from a ceiling or rafter would be so neat to be able to see from both sides.

  2. P.S. of sorts - Another great recycling project for the jackets would be to turn them into pillows. Guess you have to decided is you want to use and enjoy or preserve and protect.

I take it that your dad got these during his Army years?

  3. Good ideas. I think I want to keep them as jackets for the preservation aspect. And yes, my parents bought these while they lived in Japan when my dad was in the service.
