Hooking, the Good Way? : )

This is another of the vintage hand-made items I've save through the years. I'm not sure of the technique, but I think it's called "hooking." It's not needlepoint, and I don't think it's really crewelwork either. It's a bit "plusher," almost like a rug. It's made on a round piece of muslin/canvas cloth, which is attached to a square piece of slightly lighter-weight fabric, and was eventually meant to become a pillow. Or perhaps a seat cover of sorts? I photographed it on a dark red pillow, but the piece itself is just loose and unattached to anything. I'm not sure why so many projects like this in my collection progressed so far and then weren't finished. They're all interesting though.

  1. I'M SURE MY GRANDMOTHER DID THIS KIND OF WORK. IT WAS JUST SOMETHING WOMEN DID BACK IN THE DAY. THIS ONE IS VERY PRETTY.

I DID MAKE A RUG OR TWO WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. IT WAS FUN BUT NOT SOMETHING I'D WANT TO DO EVERYDAY.

  2. That wonderful piece looks as though it might have been intended to be a much larger piece when finished, and would have been a throw rug probably. With no border, that's what it signifies. I could be wrong. And it surely is "hooking" Casey! Good eye! (I never doubted your eye! LOL) Very pretty.

The fun's all done when you reach this point. Maybe that's why they quit.

    Happy Monday!

  3. thanks! I think I might just frame these things as is, so the edges and the backing cloth can be seen. It might be neat to celebrate the entire thing as a piece of Americana from times past. I'd like to do an artshow someday, with pieces like this in between my own art, to show the proper context of where I get my inspiration, and to show just how artistic a lot of these vintage items really are.

  7. So pretty Casey and I think framing it with all of it included is a wonderful idea. I think my mom use to do it (just couldn't say that my mom was a hooker back in the day!!!)uh-hum..anyways...it brought back memories of my mom using a hook to make a rug. I will have to call her and ask what happened to it. She has done every kind of handy work ever invented. She never just sits without her knitting. Thanks for the reminder!

    Hugs, Beth

  8. Your idea for an art show is a wonderful idea. Don't wait too long I would like to attend, seriously.

I was never a hooker (lol) but I did needlework and embroidery from time to time and knitting, but for me it's not unusual to have an unfinished piece sitting around in a basket so many of these are 'pick up put down' projects and sometimes they just get 'put down'

Waves and hi's to everyone. :0
