Snowy Friday Night

It's snowing really heavily right now. I decided to take some night shots, rare for me and my trusty little digital camera. The photo above was shot through my bedroom window. There is an orange floodlight on this side of the house, and the snow was coming down so quickly the camera rendered the rapidly descending flakes as strands of pearls. There is a cedar tree in the background catching the snow on its limbs.

This is a shot through my livingroom window. The cedar tree's boughs are holding snow as the "strands of pearls" appear in this shot too. The livingroom illumination is captured as the bluish light in the upper left corner, a result of the interaction of the white painted ceiling, the slightly tinted double-pane windows, and the CFL lights I use inside. I absolutely adore this photo! In some ways, it almost has the appearance of a Hubble Telescope photo of deep space, at least to me.

Speaking of the cosmos, this is a shot holding the camera directly up into the sky, with the flash on. The snowflakes appear like hundreds of stars and galaxies, as the flash fails to illuminate anything farther than 6 feet away.

My vintage painted milkcan and a dead autumn annual serve as a base for the wet snow to cling to. I separated some of the snowflakes in layers in Photoshop and colorized them just a bit in cyans and blues for a bit of an ethereal look.

This Azalea's evergreen leaves are catching a lot of snow creating white silhouettes. They almost look like certain pale undersea corals this way. Snowflakes closer to the camera appear as bright white irregular shapes, again much like those Hubble images of all of those galaxies in our universe.
