Back in the early 1970s, there was a lot of talk about possible VW Beetle replacements. Of course, Giugiaro would be tapped to create the eventual successor, the absolutely brilliant front-engined, front wheel drive Golf (Rabbit to the USA), but I was thinking more along the lines of an updated rear-engined car. To that end, I created this "211" when I was about 15-16 years old, doodles on an old piece of onionskin paper. The "luxury" 411 had been recently introduced in the States, so I dubbed this small VW the 211. Note that I even thought about shock absorber placement, lol. I gave it 4 wheel disc brakes, horribly proportioned tires, and a sporty profile, not at all retro, or even related to the Beetle. At least I got that part right, the Golf looked forward 100% and never looked back. Until the New Beetle of the '90s of course.
